PULASKI, Va. - In search of their first series sweep, Greeneville jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. However, it was not meant to be, as Pulaski scored eight in the third and three more in the fourth, as the Yankees salvaged the final game of the series, beating the Reds, 11-3, on Sunday night at Calfee Park.
The loss snapped Greeneville's three-game winning streak and dropped the squad to 3-3 on the season. Pulaski's victory brought an end to their four-game losing skid and improved their mark to 2-4.
Sunday's affair got off to a positive start for the Reds, as LF Nate Scantlin (2-4, R, SO) led off the game with a single to center. After 2B Jonathan Willems (2-4, 2 RBI, SO) was plunked and a one-out walk to RF Reniel Ozuna (1-4, BB, SO), C Ernesto Liberatore (0-3, RBI, SO) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put Greeneville in front, 1-0.
The G-Reds added a second tally in the second. Following a two-out walk to CF Satchel McElroy (1-3, R, BB, SO), Scantlin advanced him to third with a single through the right side on a hit-and-run. Willems proceeded to lace a line-drive single into left to bring home McElroy and put Greeneville ahead by two.
Things began to unravel, however, in the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, back-to-back bases-loaded walks to CF Robert Javier (1-4, R, 2 RBI, BB) and 3B Cody Brown (1-3, R, RBI, BB, SO) drove home two runs to even the game at two apiece.
Two pitches later, 2B Ezequiel Duran (2-5, 2 R, 3B, HR, 4 RBI, SO) lifted a fly ball to straightaway right field. The knock sailed over the high wall for a grand slam - his first of the season - giving the Yankees a 6-2 advantage.
That was not the end of the rally for Pulaski, as they would add two more in the frame on another bases-loaded walk to LF Terrance Robertson (0-0, R, RBI, 4 BB) and an infield run-scoring single by Javier. When all was said and done, the Yankees had scored eight runs on five hits and an error, while 14 batters came to the plate.
Pulaski struck for three more tallies against the Reds' bullpen in the fourth. Duran started the frame with a triple down the left-field line and came home to score on a throwing error, making it a 9-2 Yankees advantage. With a runner at second and no one out, RF Jose De Leon (1-5, R, 2B, RBI, 4 SO) looped a double into left to chase home another tally, stretching Greeneville's deficit to 10-2. The Yankees garnered their final tally with a bases-loaded balk to take a nine-run, 11-2, lead.
The Reds would scratch across one final run in the top of the ninth, as pinch-hitter Brian Rey (1-1, R, 2B) double to right and came home to score on a single to right by Willems.
LHP Jacob Heatherly (2.0+ IP, 3 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO) got off to a positive start - facing the minimum over the first pair of frames - but failed to record an out in the third, suffering his second defeat of the season for the Reds.
His counterpart - RHP Pedro Espinola (4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) - worked hard and weaseled out of trouble several times, but did not factor into the decision. RHP Carlos Espinal (3.0 IP, H, 5 SO) cruised out of the bullpen to earn his first victory of the season for Pulaski.
Greeneville's bullpen was strong over the game's final four innings. RHP Josh Rich (2.0 IP, 2 H, SO), RHP Michael Bono (1.0 IP, BB), and RHP Doug Norman (1.0 IP, SO) combined to toss scoreless relief of the game's final stages.
The Redlegs return home on Monday night to open up their second homestand of the season against the Kingsport Mets. RHP Ricky Karcher (0-1, 27.00 ERA) is expected to toe the slab for Greeneville, while the K-Mets are projected to counter with RHP Liam McCall (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
