Six different batters drove in at least one run, as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox took the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, 10-6, over the Nashville Sounds at Security Service Field.
Nashville scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but the Sky Sox answered by scoring a single run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jett Bandy grounded a single up the middle to score Brett Phillips for the catcher's 11th RBI in his seventh game in a Sox uniform.
Colorado Springs (53-31) broke through in the third inning, scoring eight runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Phillips gave the Sox their first lead with a two-run triple-his team-leading seventh three-bagger of the season-to score Lewis Brinson and Ivan De Jesus. One batter later, Bandy grounded a double into the Sounds bullpen for his second RBI in as many at-bats.
Two batters later, Nate Orf lined a two-run inside-the-park home run down the left field line, bouncing past left fielder Kenny Wilson. Bandy scored on the second inside-the-park home run of the season, following Brett Phillips's home run in Albuquerque. The Sox have hit 23 such home runs in franchise history, 17 of which coming at Security Service Field.
Kyle Wren drove in a run of his own two batters later, lining the second RBI triple of the inning into the right field corner, scoring Nick Noonan. The No. 9 batter in the lineup came in to score on a Mauricio Dubón single over the drawn-in infield, the eighth hit through the first nine batters of the inning. De Jesus capped the offense by shooting a double off the wall down the left field line, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
The Sounds (40-45) added three runs on a pair of home runs, but the Sox got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wren drove in his second run in as many at-bats, grounding a single to right field to score Nieuwenhuis and give the Sox double-figures for the 17th time in 2017.
RHP Tim Dillard (2-1, 5.44) takes the mound for his first start of 2017 in game two of the doubleheader against Nashville LHP Dalton Sawyer (0-0, 4.50). The Sox will look for a series victory and a doubleheader sweep, having split the last doubleheader played between the Sox and Sounds May 28 in Nashville.
