Burriss among eight players suspended by MLB

NEW YORK -- Veteran Major League infielder Emmanuel Burriss and seven other players were suspended on Tuesday for violations of the Minor League Baseball's drug program.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Burriss, Giants Minor League catchers Ty Ross and Cody Brickhouse, Angels shortstop Keith Grieshaber and Reds righty Ian Kahaloa all received 50-game suspensions for a second positive test for a drug of abuse. 

Astros Minor League shortstop Jonathan Arauz received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Methamphetamine and Dodgers righty Edward Perez picked up a 72-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Red Sox shortstop Jeremy Rivera was issued a 50-game ban for an undisclosed violation.
The suspensions will all be effective at the start of each player's respective 2017 season.
Burriss, 32, spent 39 games in the Majors last season with Philadelphia and hit .263 with 13 RBIs in 50 Triple-A games with Lehigh Valley. He signed with Washington in December and is currently with Triple-A Syracuse, where he spent the bulk of 2015 season. The second baseman has appeared in 326 career Major League games since making his debut there in 2008 with the Giants.
Ross, 25, was the Giants' 12th-round pick in the 2013 Draft out of LSU and hit .224 with four homers and 38 RBIs in 75 California League games last season with Class A Advanced San Jose. 
Minor League drug suspensions in 2017
Brickhouse, 20, was the Giants' 15th-round selection in 2015 and has appeared in 34 Minor League games since, all with the Rookie-level Arizona League Giants. Last year he batted .271 with six RBIs and one double in 17 games.
Grieshaber spent last season with Rookie-level Orem in the Pioneer League, where he finished at .317 with no homers and 28 RBIs in 54 games. He was the Angels 16th-round pick last June.
Kahaloa went 2-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 10 starts for Rookie-level Billings last summer, his second in the Minors. The O'ahu native was Cincinnati's fifth-round pick in 2015 and finished with 52 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings last year.
Arauz, 18, hit .249 with a pair of home runs and 18 RBIs in 53 games last year with Rookie-level Greeneville in the Appalachian League. The switch-hitting shortstop signed with Philadelphia out of Panama and debuted in 2015 before he was traded as part of the Ken Giles deal on Dec. 12, 2015.
Perez, 21, has spent each of his three seasons with the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Dodgers. Last year he went 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 21 relief outings, striking out 35 in 32 innings.
Rivera hit .260 with no home runs and 36 RBIs in 111 games for Class A Greenville last year. He was Boston's 17th-round selection in 2014 out of El Paso Community College and has appeared in 188 Minor League games since.
