WINSTON-SALEM- The Asheville Tourists played one of their best games of the season on Wednesday night and defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 7-4 to even up the series at one game apiece. Asheville has now won eight of their last ten games overall.
Wednesday’s contest had a little bit of everything for Asheville; great pitching, timely hitting, stolen bases, clutch defense, and a winning mentality throughout.
Winston-Salem jumped ahead 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the first inning but Heitor Tokar made sure the Dash did not extend the lead. Tokar kept the home team off the scoreboard for the next three innings. Tokar finished with 5.1 innings pitched and recorded ten groundouts off the Dash bats.
Asheville’s offense went to work in the top of the fourth, even though they were making solid contact over the game’s first three innings. Luis Santana hit a leadoff Home Run to tie the game. Colin Barber then drew a bases loaded walk later in the frame to give Asheville the lead. Nerio Rodriguz and Zach Daniels both added to the advantage with a Sacrifice Fly and an RBI single respectively.
The Dash managed to creep within a run by scoring once in the fifth and once in the sixth. Palmer Wenzel and Jacob Coats both did an outstanding job out of the Tourists bullpen to keep the Tourists in front. A.J. Lee hit a one-out triple in the top of the eighth and scored on Cristian Gonzalez’s RBI single to make it 5-3.
In the ninth, Daniels, C.J. Stubbs, and Santana strung together base hits to push across two more insurance runs. Jose Betances recorded the final out in the bottom of the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Game Three of the series is set for Thursday night at 7:00pm ET
