The Biloxi Shuckers (12-20) put together another ninth-inning rally but fell 5-4 to the Mississippi Braves (17-15) on Wednesday night at MGM Park.
Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Shuckers got a leadoff single from Tyler Friis and Brice Turang followed with a single to right, putting two men on base. After a pop out by Payton Henry, Alexander Palma struck out looking for the second out in the frame. Henry was ejected for arguing the strikeout call from the dugout, and on the next pitch after his ejection, Lucas Erceg launched a three-run homer to left center field, his second of the year, pulling Biloxi within a run at 5-4. The rally ended after the home run though as RHP Troy Bacon struck out Tristen Lutz to end the game.
Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the first inning for a second straight night. Henry singled with two outs off RHP Odalvi Javier (W, 3-0) and Palma followed with a double off the wall, driving in Henry to make it 1-0.
LHP Leo Crawford (L, 1-3) pitched well for the Shuckers but made his lone mistake of the night in top of the second. After a walk to Trey Harris, Crawford induced a fly out but then surrendered a go-ahead two run to Jefrey Ramos, putting the M-Braves up 2-1. Crawford settled into a groove after the homer, allowing just two more base runners and retiring the final seven batters he faced in order over five innings of work.
Mississippi would add on a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Trey Harris and two more in the seventh on a home run by Braden Shewmake.
Biloxi continues their series against the M-Braves on Thursday night at MGM Park. The Shuckers will send LHP Nick Bennett (1-1, 8.10) to the mound opposite Mississippi RHP AJ Puckett (0-1, 3.18) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, online here or on the MiLB App.
