The SeaWolves saw their losing skid extend to three games on Saturday night at UPMC Park, dropping their penultimate game with the Akron RubberDucks 11-5. Akron hammered Erie pitching for nine runs after the fifth inning. Erie was able to plate all five of their runs against Akron’s ace Juan Hillman, but never lead in the game. Four ‘Wolves, Ryan Kreidler, Spencer Torkelson, Dillon Dingler, and Brady Policelli all logged multi-hit performances in the loss.
Akron used a pair of new recruits to strike first in the game. Brayan Rocchio tripled in the first inning, and Bryan Lavastida singled him home. Both players for Akron were making their first appearance in Double-A.
Despite the early run, Elvin Rodriguez worked strong through five innings, only allowing a solo home run to Will Benson. The sixth inning was troublesome for Rodriguez, when he allowed three singles to load the bases. Resilient, Rodriguez struck out the next two batters before being lifted for a reliever.
The Erie bullpen had a forgettable night. Cale Coshow allowed a grand slam to Bo Naylor, the first batter he faced, and a three-run home run to Lavastida in the seventh inning. Ruben Garcia surrendered a two-run home run to Naylor later in the seventh before finishing the game for Erie with two scoreless innings.
Erie tied the game briefly in the bottom of the first inning. Riley Greene was hit by a pitch and needed to be removed from the game, and was replaced by Chris Proctor. Torkelson quickly singled to right field to score Proctor. Erie tried to strike Juan Hillman for more, collecting five hits over the next three innings, but could not score.
After Akron had built their lead, Erie rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to RBIs from Dingler, Kerry Carpenter, and Andre Lipcius. Kreidler smacked his 13th home run of the year in the seventh inning to cap the scoring against Hillman, who earned the win thanks to his 6.2 innings of work.
Akron got scoreless outings from Dakody Clemmer and Jake Miednik to finish the night.
Erie and Akron conclude their series on Sunday at UPMC Park. Fans will get to bring a glove and a ball and can play catch in the outfield following the game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
