Evil Empire strikes back as Louisville tops Syracuse on Star Wars Night

Syracuse, NY (July 21, 2018) - The Chiefs dropped the third game of a four-game series to the Louisville Bats with a 9-4 loss on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium with a crowd of nearly 6,000 in attendance on Star Wars Night. Alejandro De Aza walked twice in the game, extending his International League on-base streak to 21 games.

Louisville (40-55) scored first in the top of the second inning. D.J. Peterson led off with a walk. Josh VanMeter followed with a single that moved Peterson to third base. Steve Selsky then doubled, scoring Peterson to put the Bats in front, 1-0. Chadwick Tromp followed with a three-run home run to left field that gave Louisville a 4-0 lead. The inning continued with a C.J. McElroy single, a José López sacrifice bunt that advanced McElroy to second, and a Mason Williams triple that brought home McElroy to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Syracuse (40-58) responded with a run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Tuffy Gosewisch reached second on a two-base throwing error. With Bengie González batting, a wild pitch allowed Gosewisch to go to third. Gonzalez then singled to left-center field to score Gosewisch and trim the Louisville lead to four, 5-1.

The Chiefs added two runs in the third. De Aza led off with a walk. Irving Falu then crushed a ball over the right-field wall for a two-run home run that cut the Syracuse deficit to two, 5-3.

The Bats scored again in the fifth. With one out, Blake Trahan and Gabriel Guerrero both singled, putting runners at first and third. A Peterson single brought in Trahan to make it a 6-3 game, and a VanMeter base hit scored Guerrero from second to give Louisville a 7-3 edge.

Syracuse got a run in the sixth. With one out, Tuffy Gosewisch walked. Two batters later, Drew Ward singled, followed by an Andrew Stevenson walk that loaded the bases. Alejandro De Aza then worked a bases-loaded walk that scored Gosewisch, making the score 7-4. The Chiefs would leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning though with just the one run scored. 

Louisville pushed across two more runs in the ninth. Brady O'Grady doubled to begin the frame. After Williams struck out, Trahan walked, putting runners at first and second. Guerrero followed with a triple to the left-field wall that scored both O'Grady and Trahan to extend the Bats lead back to five, 9-4.

The Chiefs and Bats conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Phillips Valdez will pitch for the Syracuse. while RHP Keury Mella will be on the mound for Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
