WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (April 9, 2023) — The Greensboro Grasshoppers capture a series victory after defeating the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-3 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Heritage Financial Park.
For the second straight game, Greensboro scored first with a solo home run by Mike Jarvis on the first pitch of the game.
Making his Yankees Minor League debut, Drew Thorpe would settle down after, striking out four of the next five hitters. Hudson Valley answered back with a run in the bottom of the first with a Spencer Henson sacrifice fly. Spencer Jones and Caleb Durbin singled to start the inning before Antonio Gomez walked to load the bases and set up Henson with the RBI opportunity.
Greensboro retook the lead with a Jarvis RBI single in the third inning to go in front 2-1. The Renegades took their only lead of the contest in the fourth. Gomez and Henson each reached base with a single and a walk, and Ben Cowles and Aldenis Sanchez ripped back-to-back RBI singles to give the ‘Gades a 3-2 advantage.
In Thorpe’s final frame, Sammy Siani reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second base to place himself in scoring position. After Jackson Glenn struck out swinging, Siani stole third and advanced home on a throwing error to tie the game at three. Thorpe yielded just two earned runs in 5.2 innings while striking out eight in his debut.
Hudson Valley had a chance in the ninth after a Jones leadoff single. With two outs and Jones at second, Henson tagged a line drive to deep right field, where Jase Bowen made an incredible catch on the edge of the warning track to save the game and force extra innings.
In the tenth, with Bowen at second base, Siani led off the inning with a bunt down the third base line. Trevor Holloway (0-1) misfired the throw to first, and Bowen came around from second base to score and push Greensboro ahead 4-3.
Will Kobos (1-0) punched out two and retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to secure the win for the Grasshoppers.
After an off day tomorrow, Hudson Valley will host the Aberdeen IronBirds for the start of a six-game series on Tuesday at Heritage Financial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Coverage begins on the Renegades Baseball Network at 5:45.
