WOODBRIDGE, VA - Mario Feliciano totaled a career high four hits, but the Mudcats fell for the second straight night 10-3 to Nationals at Northwest Federal Field in Potomac on Saturday night. Feliciano went 4-for-5 with a run and a RBI in the road loss for the Mudcats.
Potomac (16-18, 53-48) starter Ben Braymer earned the win, but did so after allowing a run on two hits and two walks in the first. In all, Braymer (6-3, 3.05) walked four, struck out five and allowed one run on three hits over five innings pitched.
The game started with Braymer walking Devin Hairston, but Dallas Carroll followed with a strikeout. Demi Orimoloye then hit into a force at second, but Weston Wilson moved Orimoloye to third on a double to deep left. Cooper Hummel then walked to load the bases and Feliciano then singled to right to score Orimoloye. Wilson then attempted to score on Feliciano's hit, but was caught at home to end the inning. Wilson was out by several feet and left the game immediately after the final play in the first with an apparent injury.
Braden Webb started for Carolina (19-16, 53-52) and took the loss after allowing seven runs over two and 2/3 innings pitched. Webb (5-8, 4.47) lost a 1-0 lead in the first after allowing a two-run home run to Potomac's Luis Garcia in the opening frame. He also gave up a two-run double to Aldrem Corredor and a three-run home run to David Masters in the third before leaving the game.
Daniel Brown relieved Webb following the Masters home run and went on to work through the fifth. Brown allowed just one run and only one hit over two and 1/3 innings. He breezed his way through the third, but labored a bit in the fourth and left the game with 49 pitches thrown. Brown struck out six and walked one in his appearance out of the Carolina pen on Saturday night.
The Mudcats trailed 8-1 before coming back with two runs in the eighth against reliever Matthew Crownover. The eighth inning rally started with four straight hits, including a leadoff double from Hummel, a single from Feliciano, a RBI single from Ryan Aguilar and a single to left form Nick Roscetti.
Roscetti's hit loaded the bases and knocked Crownover out of the game. Reliever A.J. Bogucki then took over and went on to strikeout two straight in the eighth before walking in a run. Bogucki eventually escaped the eighth with only two runs allowed in as he struck out Orimoloye with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Carolina's two run eighth was quickly matched by the Nationals as they went on to score two more runs in their half of the eighth while taking a 10-3 lead. Both runs were allowed in by reliever Phil Bickford who had taken over for Brown in the seventh. Bickford ended up allowing two runs on three hits over three innings. He also struck out three and walked two.
Bogucki finished the game out of the pen for Potomac. He ended up pitching through two scoreless frames with two walks and a strikeout. Crownover, meanwhile, allowed two runs on seven hits over two innings in the game.
Feliciano led the way for Carolina at the plate after going 4-for-5 with a run a RBI. Roscetti went 2-for-4 and Hummel went 1-for-4 with a double.
Masters, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the game for the Nationals. He homered in the third and also doubled in the game. Garcia also homered and went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
The Mudcats next play on Sunday afternoon in Potomac as they conclude their three game road series versus the Nationals. Potomac has won two straight in the series and lead 2-0. The game will air on the Mudcats Radio Network, the Big Dawg 98.5 FM and via TuneIn Radio at carolinamudcats.com.
