(Lakewood, NJ) – After missing all of 2022, David Parkinson shined, with four-strong innings, in the Reading Fightin Phils 3-2 win over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in Tuesday night’s exhibition.
Parkinson got the start and went four innings while giving up three hits, one earned run, and striking out five. Parkinson was followed by ten relief pitchers, all of which did not throw more than one inning.
Offensively, Reading got all its runs in the fourth and fifth innings. McCarthy Tatum lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Matthew Kroon and Wendell Rijo drove in Max McDowell with a single in the fourth. In the fifth, the R-Phils were the beneficiaries of three walks, including a bases-loaded one that scored Carlos De La Cruz.
Aside from that, Reading’s bats were kept much at bay. The R-Phils offense combined for 14 strikeouts as Jersey Shore’s staff looked strong in the exhibition matchup. Gabriel Cotto got the start for the BlueClaws and looked strong over three innings, with five strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Jersey Shore followed Cotto with a plethora of bullpen arms as well.
Jersey Shore got the scoring going in the bottom of the first after Marcus Lee Sang singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Leandro Pineda drove him in with a single later in the frame. The BlueClaws' other run came in the sixth inning, also scored by Lee Sang on a sacrifice fly by Rixon Wingrove.
The BlueClaws threatened in the eighth inning to tie the game, but a couple of nice defensive plays by Nick Podkul shut down the rally. Braden Zarbnisky and Keylan Killgore combined to pitch a scoreless ninth to give Reading the exhibition win.
Next up, both teams get their respective regular seasons underway. Jersey Shore opens its season on Friday at the Brooklyn Cyclones at 1 p.m. Reading hits the road to Richmond for a three-game matchup with the Flying Squirrels. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:35 p.m. and you can watch the game on MiLB TV.
