Behind a third straight excellent start from RHP Dylan File (W, 2-0), the Biloxi Shuckers (45-33, 4-4 2nd Half) stymied the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (41-37, 3-5) in a 5-1 victory on Thursday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. File fell an out shy of a quality start but limited Pensacola to just four hits in his outing.
In his third Double-A start, File retired the first eight men in a row, allowing his first baserunner on a full-count walk to Mike Davis in the third. The righty didn't allow his first hit until the fourth inning, when Mark Contreras doubled off the right-field wall. Already spotted a four-run cushion, the 23-year-old's lone mistake came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when he left a pitch over the plate that Lewin Diaz hit out to right for his second home run of the season, putting Pensacola on the board. Ben Rortvedt then singled to right and Kiriloff dumped a double out into left, ending the night for File. LHP Daniel Brown (H, 5) came on and retired the one man he was tasked with facing, preserving File's winning status.
The Shuckers offense capitalized on a pair of error by Pensacola in the third. Alexander Alvarez singled with one out and C.J. Hinojosa reached on a throwing error by Travis Blankenhorn with two outs in the frame. Patrick Leonard followed with a single out to right that Kiriloff misplayed, allowing Hinojosa to race in and score from second, giving the Shuckers a 2-0 lead.
Solid hitting would add to the Biloxi lead in the fifth. Joantgel Segovia started the frame with a double to center off LHP Charlie Barnes (L, 0-2) and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alvarez. Luis Aviles Jr. doubled to the left-field gap to drive in Segovia and scored on a triple to the right-field corner by Hinojosa, giving Biloxi a comfortable 4-0 edge.
RHP Aaron Kurcz (H, 6) tossed two perfect innings for the Shuckers, striking out one. Alvarez padded the Shuckers lead with an RBI single in the ninth, his second hit of the night, and RHP Devin Williams finished the deed for Biloxi with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
Looking for a series win, Biloxi sends RHP Trey Supak (8-3, 2.27) to the mound for Game Four of the series on Friday night at 6:35 pm. He'll be opposed by Blue Wahoos RHP Jorge Alcala (5-5, 5.65).
