Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs caught a bad break and fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 1-0 on Sunday night. The series is now even with the rubber game set for Monday and the Chiefs are 71-53 overall.
The only run of the game scored against Johan Oviedo in the fifth inning. With Jonathan Lacroix on first base, Scott Schreiber hit a grounder to second base and the Chiefs turned a 4-6-3 double play. But in the biggest game changing moment, the ball was ruled to have hit the base umpire in the leg, therefore making the ball dead and putting Bandits at first and second. Instead of two outs and nobody on, there were two on and nobody out as Marty Costes flew out to center. The inning should have been over but instead Chandler Taylor doubled to right and the Chiefs were down 1-0 as Lacroix scored.
The Chiefs best chance came in the eighth inning against reliever Hansel Paulino. Nick Plummer walked with two outs and Rayder Ascanio singled to center. A wild pitch moved the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second but Paulino got a strikeout to end the inning.
In the ninth the Chiefs just missed tying the game in another big moment. With two down, Yariel Gonzalez hit a towering fly ball to right-field that was caught against the wall by Taylor to end the game.
Oviedo (9-9) took the loss as he allowed one run on five hits over five innings while walking three and striking out five. CJ Saylor threw two shutout and hitless innings as he walked one and struck out three. Ben Yokley allowed one walk over one shutout and hitless inning.
