Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City Dodgers pitcher Wilmer Font threw six scoreless innings, guiding the Dodgers to a 2-0 shutout win in their series opener against the New Orleans Baby Cakes Monday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Font, who was named to the All-PCL Team earlier in the day, held the Baby Cakes to three hits and racked up eight strikeouts to push his Triple-A-leading season strikeout total to 178. Font allowed one walk as he secured his 10th victory of the season.
Dodgers relievers Yaisel Sierra and Jordan Jankowski followed Font and combined for three scoreless and hitless frames with two strikeouts. Jankowski picked up his 11th save of the season as the Dodgers recorded their ninth shutout victory of 2017.
The Dodgers threatened to score early in front of a crowd of 4,174. Oklahoma City loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning for Edwin Ríos, who grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Oklahoma City's Charlie Culberson led off with a double into the left-field corner and advanced to third base on a groundout by Jack Murphy. New Orleans starting pitcher Scott Copeland then retired Font and Alex Verdugo to end the inning and keep Oklahoma City off the scoreboard.
The Dodgers (70-64) broke through in the third inning.
Infielder Rob Segedin led off with a solo homer into the New Orleans' bullpen in right-center field as he homered for the second straight night. The home run was his fourth of the season with Oklahoma City.
Font retired 11 straight New Orleans batters between the second and sixth innings, including six via strikeout, as Oklahoma City kept the Baby Cakes (53-78) off the scoreboard and to three hits total on the night.
The Dodgers later added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Max Muncy lined a double with two outs into right field and scored on a single by Tim Locastro for a 2-0 Dodgers lead.
Muncy and Segedin each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Dodgers, as Muncy extended his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games and the Dodgers recorded a second straight win against New Orleans.
New Orleans starting pitcher Copeland (9-11) allowed one run and five hits over 7.0 innings, but was charged with the loss, allowing two walks with two strikeouts.
Dodgers pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts in the game and boosted their league-leading total to 1,218 strikeouts on the season. Oklahoma City needs 28 strikeouts over its final seven games to break the PCL modern-era record the team set last season (1,245).
The Dodgers continue their final home series of the regular season against the New Orleans Baby Cakes at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
