Montgomery, AL - Former All-Star closer Kirby Yates has been added to the Mississippi Braves roster on Friday to begin a major league rehab assignment from Atlanta. The 35-year-old right-hander was signed by the Braves Braves to a two-year contract on November 29, 2021.Yates underwent Tommy John surgery on March 24, 2021, his second such procedure…He also had surgery in 2006.
Yates has pitched in seven major league seasons, compiling a 12-17 record and a 3.54 ERA (111 ER/282.1 IP) with 57 saves. He has appeared with the Rays (2014-’15), Yankees (’16), Angels (‘17), and Padres (’17-’20). Yates led the majors in ERA (1.19) and saves (41) in 2019, going 0-5 with 101 strikeouts and allowing just eight earned runs in 60.2 innings. Yates was named a finalist for N.L. Reliever of the Year, joining current teammate Will Smith (SF) and eventual winner Josh Hader (MIL). He set the Padres’ franchise record with 30 saves before the All-Star break, passing Heath Bell’s 26 saves prior to the All-Star break in 2011...Also set the record for the lowest opponent AVG (.163), OBP (.231), SLG (.230), and OPS (.461) by a Padres pitcher prior to the All-Star break. He was an NL All-Star in 2019 and named All-NL First Team.
Yates is scheduled to pitch one inning for the M-Braves on Saturday, and one inning on Sunday. Jared Shuster, who is scheduled to make the Friday night start in Montgomery will enter after Yates' inning.
