KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 7, 2017) - The Intimidators dropped Monday night's game to the Drive, 6-1, as former Charlotte 49ers infielder Brett Netzer turned in a strong showing for Greenville at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. The Drive second baseman factored into a pair of runs, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to help Greenville beat Kannapolis (19-25 Second Half, 58-54).
Greenville's Jay Groome (3-4) earned the win with 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out six while working around three hits and two walks. Daniel Gonzalez tossed the sixth and seventh innings before Robby Sexton closed the game with 2.0 shutout innings for the Drive.
Kannapolis starter Andre Davis (6-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over 4 and 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking four.
Netzer singled to lead off the second inning and scored on a Ryan Scott double. In the ninth, he singled to cash Granger Studdard to cap the Drive's offensive night. Netzer played his college ball just down the road from Kannapolis at UNC Charlotte before being drafted by the Red Sox in the third round of the June 2017 First-Year Player Draft.
Down 5-0, Kannapolis got on the board in the seventh inning when Mitch Roman singled, moved to second base on an Evan Skoug walk, and scored on a Grant Massey base hit. The single snapped the Intimidators' 22-inning scoreless streak, the team's longest of the season.
The Intimidators face the Drive again on Tuesday as RHP Blake Hickman (3-5, 4.10 ERA) takes the mound against Greenville's LHP Jonathan Diaz (4-4, 4.66 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday's game is BINGO Night where fans can play BINGO between innings for a chance to win tickets to the Intimidators playoff game on Friday, Sept. 8.
