LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - It was a postseason to remember, with a few winner-take-all games mixed in with one of the more memorable World Series in recent history. This year's postseason featured seven former Storm players and a few coaches that once donned the Storm uniform.
The Colorado Rockies were eliminated in the National League Wild Card game at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks, but for just one game Storm fans might've recognized a former Padres outfielder who made a rehab appearance for the Storm in 2016. Alexi Amarista went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the Rockies lone postseason game.
The Cubs and Nationals took the National League Division Series to five games, with the Cubs besting Washington. Left-handed pitcher Oliver Pérez, a Storm player in 2001 and 2002, threw in parts of two games, earning a playoff win without giving up an earned run. Teammate Jose Lobaton, a Storm player in 2006 and 2007, went 1-for-2 this postseason.
The Yankees bested the Cleveland Indians and former Storm pitcher Corey Kluber (2008-2009) in five games in the American League Division Series. Although Kluber's numbers were not on par with his Cy Young-worthy regular season numbers, the right-handed pitcher started two games and tallied ten strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Los Angeles Dodgers got by the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs fairly easily in the National League Championship Series, claiming the series in five games and keeping John Lackey from earning his fourth World Series ring. Lackey, a Storm pitcher in 2000, tossed three games for the Cubs this postseason. He's reached the postseason in ten of his 16 seasons in Major League Baseball, winning World Series titles with the Angels in 2002, Red Sox in 2013, and Cubs in 2016.
The Dodgers roster was dotted with a handful of former Storm players, whether they made brief rehab stints or played a significant amount of time for Lake Elsinore. Infielder Logan Forsythe, a member of the Storm in 2009, went 11-for-37 (.297 batting average) with two doubles, six RBIs and nine walks to score nine Dodgers runs. Yasmani Grandal, who made a rehab appearance for the Storm in 2012, went hitless in eight at-bats, but collected three walks for Los Angeles. Brandon Morrow, a 2016 Storm rehabber, appeared in 14 of 15 playoff games for the Dodgers, including all seven World Series games. He threw to a 3.95 earned run average.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts donned the Storm uniform in parts of 2005 and 2006, while hitting coach Shawn Wooten played for the Storm in 1998 before managing the Storm in 2012 and 2013.
In a way, the Astros-Dodgers World Series matchup was somewhat of a California League Championship, with 27 players having suited up for a Cal League club. The Houston Astros, formerly affiliated with the Lancaster Jethawks, had 13 former Cal Leaguers, including stars Carlos Correa, José Altuve, World Series MVP George Springer, Alex Bregman, Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers, to name a few.
The Dodgers, still affiliated with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, had 14 former Cal Leaguers on the World Series roster. Familiar names like Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, and Yasiel Puig donned the Quakes uniform.
