CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 9, 2017) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs rallied for four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 6-2 win over the Clearwater Threshers Tuesday at Spectrum Field.
Charlotte (15-17) knocked out Threshers (20-13) starter Franklyn Kilomé (2-2) in the first inning, scoring all six runs in the first third of the game.
Stone Crabs second baseman Ryan Brett started the game with a solo homer to deep left to make it 1-0. After a strikeout, Kilome walked four straight batters to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, David Rodríguez lined a single to right to plate a pair and make it 4-0 Crabs.
With the score still 4-0 in the second, Brett singled up the middle before stealing second base. After a groundout moved him to third, Jake Cronenworth flew out to center to bring home Brett and move the tally to 5-0.
After a Jose Pujols home run made it 5-1, Dalton Kelly doubled to right in the third before Jake Fraley singled up the middle to extend the Charlotte lead to 6-1.
After Stone Crabs starter Alexis Tapia exited due to injury in the third, Charlotte lefty Greg Maisto worked 2.2 innings of one-run ball to keep the game at 6-2. Joe Serrapica (1-0) then dealt 1.2 innings scoreless to earn his first win at the High-A level.
Brandon Lawson then fired two perfect innings while striking out three to finish off the win.
The Stone Crabs will go for the series victory in Wednesday's rubber game with Clearwater at 10:30 a.m. Michael Velasquez (0-3, 5.18) makes the start for Charlotte against Cole Irvin (3-2, 1.69) of Clearwater. Coverage begins at 10:15 a.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
