The Biloxi Shuckers (17-16) used a four-run fourth inning on Wednesday afternoon at MGM Park to seal a series-clinching 4-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (19-13) and win their third straight. Oregon State product Drew Rasmussen made his Double-A debut on the mound and was supported by seven strong innings from the bullpen, while Bruce Caldwell delivered the go-ahead swing.
With pitch limitations in place, Rasmussen completed two innings over his start, surrendering an RBI double in the second inning to Lucius Fox before striking out Brendan McKay in the following at bat. The Brewers sixth round selection from 2018 faced Miles Mastrobuoni in the third and allowed a leadoff single before departing.
Trailiing 1-0 in the fourth, Weston Wilson smacked a leadoff double off Sam McWilliams (L, 1-1) and advanced to third on a Dillon Thomas single. Luis Aviles Jr. dropped a clean bunt single down the first base side and scored Wilson to tie the game thereafter. Cooper Hummel followed with a third straight base hit against McWilliams to load the bases for Bruce Caldwell. The Shuckers second baseman capitalized on the opportunity, shooting a single up the middle to score Thomas along with Aviles Jr. and send Hummel sliding into third. An errant throw from Josh Lowe in center fielder got passed the third baseman and Hummel raced home to make it a 4-1 game.
After taking over for Rasmussen in the third, Devin Williams (W, 5-1) demonstrated a good mix of speeds and steadied the game with three scoreless innings from the bullpen. The right-hander struck out six and left four runners stranded, recording his team-leading fifth victory. Tyler Spurlin, Cody Ponce and Daniel Brown covered from the bullpen until the ninth when Nate Griep entered and faced the minimum for his Southern League leading seventh save. The save also marks the 95th of Griep's career.
With the series in hand, the Shuckers continue their matchup with the Biscuits on Thursday evening at 6:35 pm. Biloxi will send RHP Bowden Francis (0-2, 9.39) to the mound, while the Biscuits will begin with an opener and then send LHP Kenny Rosenberg (2-0, 2.08) to the mound.
