Four pitchers combined to throw a shutout for the Biloxi Shuckers (14-13) in a 1-0 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (17-10) on Thursday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. With the win, Biloxi has now won their last three games.
RHP Trey Supak didn't factor into the decision but tossed five scoreless frames for the Shuckers. His lone jam came in the third inning, when Pensacola loaded the bases on two walks and an intentional walk to Alex Kirilloff. With two outs, Travis Blankenhorn flied out to right field, keeping the Blue Wahoos off the board. Supak allowed just two hits and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 2.20 for the season.
Biloxi threatened against RHP Jorge Alcala in the fourth. Weston Wilson singled to lead off the inning, bringing Cooper Hummel to the dish. The switch hitter cranked a ball to deep right field that Kirilloff lost in the lights, and the ball bounced off the warning track and up onto the berm in right for a ground rule double. Alcala wriggled out of the jam, though, with a fielders' choice, a strikeout and a groundout, keeping the game scoreless.
RHP Devin Williams (W, 4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season by tossing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four while not walking a batter.
The Shuckers went in front in the eighth. Alexander Alvarez started the inning with a single off RHP Cody Stashak (L, 2-2) and Michael O'Neill was hit by a pitch in the ensuing at bat. C.J. Hinojosa came in to pinch run for Alvarez and moved to third on a fielders' choice by Trent Grisham. With Dillon Thomas batting, Hinojosa raced in to score on a passed ball by Caleb Hamilton, giving the Shuckers the only run of the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, LHP Daniel Brown (H, 1) allowed two base runners on a walk and a single but got a strikeout of Kirilloff and a groundout from Jaylon Davis to leave the tying run at third. RHP Nate Griep (S, 5) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the second consecutive night, striking out two en route to his fifth save of the year in five chances.
Biloxi continues their five-game series against Pensacola on Friday night at 6:35 pm. RHP Braden Webb (1-3, 6.28) is scheduled to take the hill for the Shuckers opposite Blue Wahoos RHP Brusdar Graterol (2-0, 2.30). The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
