Six-Run Eighth Inning Sinks Delmarva
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (6-4) took a gut-punch defeat at the hands of the Fredericksburg Nationals (4-6) on Independence Day as the Fred Nats rallied late to top Delmarva 7-6.
It was a pitcher's duel to begin the night as neither starter allowed an earned run with Juan De Los Santos going four innings for the Shorebirds. His mound opponent, Luke Young tossed five innings of scoreless baseball as the game entered the sixth 0-0.
In the sixth, the bats got hot for the 'Birds as Trendon Craig gave Delmarva the lead with an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer by Noelberth Romero to suddenly make it 4-0 Delmarva.
It stayed 4-0 into the eighth inning but that's when the Fred Nats put together a furious rally. Daylen Lile began the frame with a three-run homer after the first two men reached in front of him to trim Delmarva's lead to 4-3. Fredericksburg then loaded the bases with nobody out with an error and a pair of singles. Wilmer Perez tied the game with a deep sacrifice fly to center to make it a 4-4 game. With runners at second and third and two outs, John McHenry produced the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run single to put the Shorebirds in a 6-4 hole.
But Delmarva would fight back as they pulled within one on an RBI triple by Anderson De Los Santos to score Noelberth Romero, but Matt Merrill would retire the next two Delmarva hitters to keep the tying run stranded at third.
In the final inning, the Nationals produced an important insurance run on a wild pitch as Paul Witt scored from third base to push the lead back to two for Fredericksburg.
The Shorebirds would show more fight in the ninth inning as Angel Tejada led off the frame with a solo home run to the opposite field to make it 7-6. Elio Prado would walk after Tejada and put himself at second base after a wild pitch. But Merrill would respond on the mound by striking out the next three Delmarva hitters to end the game, giving the Fred Nats a 7-6 win.
Pedro Gonzalez (4-2) was awarded the win in relief for Fredericksburg with Hugo Beltran (3-1) taking the loss for the Shorebirds. Matt Merrill (1) earned the save.
Four players for Delmarva finished the night with two hits, including Noelberth Romero who drove in three with his second homer of the season. The Shorebirds finished with five total extra-base hits on the night with a double, two triples, and two home runs.
Delmarva will look for a bounce-back on Wednesday night as Bradley Brehmer gets the ball against Erik Tolman for the Nationals. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
