State College, PA – The Frederick Keys were defeated by the State College Spikes in the second of a two game series on Tuesday night by a final score of 3-1.
The Keys are swept for the third time this season, and fall to 0-3-1 in rubber matches in 2021. Frederick brought its scoreless innings streak to an end after going 20 innings without safely crossing home.
Dwayne Marshall started the game for the Keys on the mound, making his first official start after rain postponed his start last Wednesday after two innings. Marshall fought in the 2nd inning tonight, working out of a bases loaded jam to send the scoreless game into the 3rd.
State College started the scoring in the affair, pushing across two runs in the 4th inning. Jack Anderson and James Jett led off the inning with walks. Marshall struck out Brady Brecklin for the first out of the inning. Marshall threw a wild pitch to Marques Paige allowing both runners to move up a base. Myles Austin came up to the plate with two outs and roped a single into right field scoring Anderson and Jett.
The Frederick Keys had an answer offensively in the 6th inning. Dominique Collie, who reached in every at bat of the evening, started things off with a single. The Spikes attempted to pick him off and the ball got away, allowing Collie to move up two bases. Collie came around to score the lone Keys run of the game on a wild pitch. The run marked the first time the Keys scored since the 5th inning of Sunday’s game.
State College added a run in the bottom half of the 6th. Brecklin led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a balk by Francois Castillo. Paige moved Brecklin to third with a sacrifice bunt. Brecklin scored on a ground ball to third base hit by Mark Vierling.
The Keys had multiple chances to tie the game, but none came closer than in the 8th inning. With runners on second and third, Eddie McCabe was at bat with two outs. McCabe ripped a ball down the first base line that was snatched up to end the inning. The Keys would not get a baserunner the rest of the game.
Frederick heads home for a five-game homestand starting on Wednesday against Mahoning Valley. The Keys head back to Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium with an 0-6-1 record. For more information on the Frederick Keys please contact JJ Michalski at [email protected].
