Lakewood, NJ - Cole Freeman doubled in the ninth inning, extending his hit-streak to 11 games as the Hagerstown Suns took a 2-0 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. The Suns fall to 15-27 overall and will play the second game of a four-game series on Tuesday with a 6:35 PM first pitch.
Lakewood took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with two outs against Suns starter Jackson Tetreault. Tetreault struck out Josh Stephen to start the inning and got Jake Scheiner to fly out to right, but Nick Maton hit his third homer of the year over the left-field wall to give Lakewood a 1-0 advantage.
David Parkinson was lights-out for the BlueClaws, holding Hagerstown to just one hit over his seven innings of work. Aldrem Corredor singled in the second inning against Parkinson but was picked off later in the frame. The Suns struck out nine times against the southpaw, which tied a season-high for him while he retired the final 16 batters he faced.
Lakewood tacked on another run in the seventh against Suns reliever Jared Brasher. Jake Scheiner was hit by a pitch with one out and Maton singled to right. Jhailyn Ortiz singled to left, loading the bases for Gregori Rivero who drove in Scheiner with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 Lakewood lead.
The Suns got a baserunner in the ninth against BlueClaws closer Addison Russ. With two outs, Freeman doubled down the line in left to bring the tying run to the plate and extending his team-best hit streak to 11 games. Luis Garcia struck out to end the threat and the game, with the Suns taking their 27th loss of the season.
Tetreault (0-5) took the loss in a quality start, allowing one run on five hits over 6.0 innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Brasher allowed one run on two hits with two walks and a strikeout over two innings of relief.
