The Fresno Grizzlies (18-26) defeated the Memphis Redbirds (27-17) 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Chukchansi Park. Every Grizz batter reached base at least once in the victory. The six Fresno doubles were one shy of the season-high of seven which occurred on May 13 at Oklahoma City.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the first with Nick Martini (2-for-5) hitting his first home run of the season. The solo shot was hit to left. The Grizzlies came back in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Derek Fisher (single) scored on a Reid Brignac (4-for-4) RBI single and an Andrew Aplin sacrifice fly scored Max Stassi (walk).
The Grizzlies extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth and fifth. Brignac drove in his second run of the game with a double and Fisher hit a RBI groundout the following inning that scored Teoscar Hernández. In the sixth, the Redbirds cut Fresno's lead to 4-2 when Harrison Bader scored on a Carson Kelly groundout.
A four-run bottom of the sixth put the Grizzlies ahead 8-2. Tony Kemp knocked a RBI double to score Brignac who also doubled. After Preston Tucker singled, Colin Moran crushed a three-run homer to right, his second in back-to-back games. His seventh long ball of the season was also his third of the eight-game homestand.
The Redbirds and Grizzlies traded runs in the seventh to make the score 9-3. For Memphis, Rangel Ravelo hit a RBI single to score Luke Voit (3-for-4). For Fresno, Jon Kemmer hit a pinch-hit double to score Brignac who knocked his third double of the game to get on. It was also his fourth hit of the contest to give him his first four-hit game of the season. The last Fresno batter to knock three doubles in a game was Kemp on May 14 at Oklahoma City.
In his fourth start of the season for the Grizzlies, Casey Coleman (2-2) went five innings and earned the win allowing one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Memphis starter Arturo Reyes (5-2) went three innings and allowed two runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout in the loss.
The Grizzlies look to take three-of-four from the Redbirds in the series finale on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. Probable starters are RHP John Gant (0-0, 2.70) for Memphis and RHP David Martinez (1-5, 8.18) for Fresno.
