The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball, are proud to announce that left-handed pitcher Matt Gage has been named Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 19-25. Gage is the first Squirrels player to win a weekly Eastern League award in 2017.

Gage earns the honor for his performance on Thursday, June 22 against the Hartford Yard Goats. The southpaw became just the fourth pitcher in franchise history to throw a nine-inning complete game shutout. Gage allowed just five hits and one walk on 106 pitches in the 3-0 Richmond win over Hartford. He also added a double at the plate as one of 10 Squirrels hits in the game. The lefty joins the likes of Giants top prospect Tyler Beede (2016), Jack Snodgrass (2014), and Mike McDonald (2010) to go the distance in a shutout. This is the second time Gage has been the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. He was the award recipient on May 23, 2016.
"Matt has been a true asset to our rotation," said Flying Squirrels Manager Kyle Haines. "His performance on Thursday was nothing short of remarkable. You don't see many nine-inning shutouts in today's game of baseball."
