BUFFALO, NY — Despite a towering ninth-inning home run from red-hot catcher Ronaldo Hernandez, the Worcester Red Sox took a 4-1 loss to the Buffalo Bisons on Saturday night at Sahlen Field.

Hernandez’s sixth homer of the season continued a blistering stretch for the catcher, who is one of the top hitters in the International League since May 17 (.406 AVG, 5 HR, 15 RBI in 17 games). The long blast cut a 4-0 deficit to 4-1 in the top of the ninth inning, and nearly reached the highway ramp beyond the left field wall.

Buffalo scored a pair of runs in the second and seventh innings to support a strong start from Thomas Hatch (6.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K). Chavez Young and Logan Warmoth delivered the early RBIs, and Tanner Morris added a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0 in the late innings.

Taylor Cole was the bright point of a bullpen game for Worcester’s pitching staff, tossing three one-hit shutout innings with a season-high four strikeouts.

Worcester was held to four hits: a second-inning double from Jaylin Davis, a third-inning double from Yolmer Sanchez, a sixth-inning single by Ryan Fitzgerald, and the ninth-inning solo shot by Hernandez.

The WooSox return home to Polar Park to start a 12-game homestand on Tuesday. Tickets are available now at WooSox.com.
