TONIGHT'S GAMES: Iowa and Colorado Springs are set to square off in a doubleheader for the second time in three days at Principal Park. The I-Cubs and Sky Sox split the twin bill back on Tuesday, with Iowa winning the first game, 2-0, and Colorado Springs winning game two, 6-4. With a win in either game tonight, the I-Cubs would secure at least a tie in the four-day, six-game series against the Sky Sox.<
SMACKDOWN: The I-Cubs shut out the Sky Sox 2-0 on Wednesday, making it the second time in the series that Iowa won a game by a 2-0 score. Iowa improves to 7-5 in shutout games this season, with its .583 winning percentage ranking fourth-best in the Pacific Coast League. It's the first time the I-Cubs have won two shutouts in the same series since August 2015, when they shut out Omaha 4-0 and 3-0, respectively, on August 7 and 9. It's the first time the I-Cubs have won two shutouts by the same exact score in a series since May 2012, when they defeated New Orleans 1-0 in the opener and finale of a four-game series on May 4 and 7.
MILLION DOLLAR MAN: John Andreoli stole his 100th base in an Iowa Cubs uniform on Wednesday, becoming just the second player in franchise history to do so. He is second to only Chico Walker's 146 stolen bases in I-Cubs history. Andreoli's three-steal game in yesterday's contest gives him 26 stolen bases on the season, now leading the league. He also led the PCL in stolen bases last season with 43.
IF YOU SMELL WHAT BIJAN IS COOKIN': Bijan Rademacher went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI yesterday, supplying Iowa's lone extra-base hit of the game. Rademacher has been excellent in August, batting .435 (10-for-23) with four runs, a double, home run and three RBI in 11 games. He's been a sparkplug for Iowa, starting at left field, right field and designated hitter, while also making three pinch-hit appearances in the month.
DUDE GLOVE: Iowa has only made one error in its last 10 games as a team, going 6-4 in those contests. The lone error was made by relief pitcher Jack Leathersich on a sacrifice bunt play, with Leathersich making a wild throw. Through 122 games this season, the I-Cubs have exactly as many errors (96) as they finished the 2016 season with.
AGAINST COLORADO SPRINGS: Iowa and Colorado Springs are scheduled to play six games over four days in what will be their final meeting of the season. The I-Cubs and Sky Sox have been unlucky with weather this year, with a total of five postponements and a cancellation. Games scheduled for April 29-30 at Principal Park were postponed due to inclement weather, and the clubs' first three games out of the All-Star break in Colorado Springs from July 13-15 were either postponed or cancelled due to rain.
STYLIN', PROFILIN':Taylor Davis went 1-for-3 with a run in Wednesday's 2-0 win, extending his hitting streak to eight games. In his last 25 games, Davis is batting .379 (39-for-103) with 15 runs, 14 doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI and 15 multi-hit games. From August 6-8, he became the first I-Cub with three straight multi-RBI games since Willson Contreras last season.
MIKE KNOCKS:Mike Freeman went 2-for-4 yesterday in his 10th game with the I-Cubs. Since joining Iowa, he's batting .278 (10-for-36) with five runs, a double, home run and three RBI. He has hit safely in seven of 10 and reached base in nine. He's also started at four different positions: shortstop (four games), third base (four), second base (one) and right field (one).
TEN COUNT: Iowa Cubs manager Marty Pevey is 10 wins away from reaching 1,000 for his managerial career. He won 563 games in nine years managing in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, 48 with the Medicine Hat Blue Jays from 1996-97, 81 with the Hagerstown Suns in 1998, 218 with the Dunedin Blue Jays from 2000-02, 79 with the New Haven Ravens in 2003 and 137 with the Syracuse SkyChiefs from 2004-05. He started managing in the Cubs organization in 2009, winning 81 games with the Peoria Chiefs. He became I-Cubs skipper in 2013, winning 346 games with Iowa coming into play today.
