Garrett Adds Home Run And Two RBIs In 14-6 Loss To Riders

AMARILLO, Texas - Amarillo fell 14-6 to the Frisco RoughRiders in the series opener on Tuesday night. A back-and-fourth contest early took a turn in Frisco's favor in the later frames.

Arizona Diamondbacks No. 26 rated prospect Brandon Pfaadt got the ball for his fifth Double-A start since his promotion to Amarillo. The former fifth round draft pick out of Bellarmine University (Louisville, KY) has made his way to Double-A in his first professional season.

Pfaadt allowed a solo home run in each of the first three innings as the Riders took a three run advantage over the Soddies.

Amarillo was held without a hit through the first two and two-thirds innings Tuesday night. Ryder Jones started a mini rally in the home half of the third inning. His first triple since August 30, 2018 kept the inning alive before three straight singles behind him made it a one run game. Fresh off being named Double-A Central Player of the Week, Dominic Fletcher led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his third triple in as many games. Andy Yerzy brought him home when he hit his fifth home run since joining Amarillo on August 24th. The two-run homer propelled the Sod Poodles in front by one run at 4-3.

The RoughRiders tacked on another two home runs - a solo and two-run home run to regain their lead in the top of the fifth. Pfaadt's night came to an end when fellow right-hander Justin Lewis replaced him on the mound in the top of the sixth. Lewis retired the Riders in order with three strikeouts in his first inning of work.

Frisco broke the game open with a seven run top of the seventh as they batted through their order while hitting another two home runs in the frame.

Right-hander Wesley Rodriguez made his second appearance in Amarillo, coming in for the last out of the seventh inning before tossing a scoreless eighth.

Stone Garrett added to his home run total in the bottom of the eighth inning by sending the first pitch he saw 452 ft into the September night. His team-leading 22nd home run of the year added to what has already been a career year in that category for the Houston-are native. The solo shot also gave him his 75th RBI of the year which now places him in a tie for second in the Double-A Central for the RBI lead with six games to play. Another three hits helped push Amarillo's sixth and final run of the night across the plate.

Frisco's seventh home run of the evening concluded the night's scoring.

The final series of the 2021 season continues from downtown Amarillo with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday night at HODGETOWN. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 5:05 PM with left-hander and D-backs' No. 16 rated prospect Tommy Henry (4-6, 4.79 ERA) getting the ball in game one. Game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Streaks Intact: Six Sod Poodles entered Tuesday's contest riding hit streaks of at least five games and all five who played on Tuesday extended their streaks. Geraldo Perdomo made it nine games with his 1-for-5 night in the series opener. The D-backs' No. 9 rated prospect is hitting .421 (16-for-38) with two home runs, three doubles, two triples,and 10 RBI during this stretch. Eduardo Diaz has hit safely in his last seven games while Ryder Jones extended his streak to six games with his 2-for-4 night. The two Dom's riding streaks coming into the game also extended. Dominic Canzone singled and Dominic Miroglio doubled in the ninth for his seventh straight game with a knock. Andy Yerzy hit a home run, also joining the group of Soddies with a hit in at least five straight games.

Bomb City: Amarillo added to their single-season record of home runs by hitting another two home runs in the first game against the Riders. The team now has 147 home runs in 114 games played. The team currently ranks T-3rd in all of minor league baseball with 67 of those home runs coming since August 1st.

A Triple Threat: Dominic Fletcher and Ryder Jones each tallied a triple in the series opening win/loss to the Riders on Tuesday night. Fletcher has tripled in three straight games making him the first Sod Poodle to accomplish that feat. For Jones, his two-out triple in the bottom of the third was the 11th of his career and first since August 30, 2018 when he was with Triple-A Sacramento in the Giants organization. Amarillo ranks 4th in all of Minor League Baseball with 40 triples this season.

Stone Mashing Time: Soddies outfielder Stone Garrett added to his team lead in hits, home runs, and RBI on Tuesday night. The Sugar Land, Texas native not only leads the team in those three categories but leads the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system with his 22 home runs. and 75 RBI. He ranks top 10 among all D-backs' minor leaguers in hits, extra base hits, total bases, AVG, SLG, and OPS. He also ranks top 10 in the Double-A Central in all the same categories.

Long Ball Logistics: Soddies starter Brandon Pfaadt allowed a career-high five home runs in his start - the most in his young career. He came into the game allowing 15 home runs through his first 20 pro starts including four solo home runs in his last start on September 8th versus Tulsa. He has now allowed multiple home runs in consecutive games for the first time in his career. Frisco tied a season-high for home runs hit against the Soddies in a single game with their six homers hit. They matched the number they set here at HODGETOWN on August 24th.
