Padres' Turner part of huge Myers trade

It's unlikely Trea Turner's parents were predicting his future when they gave him his first name, which comes from the Latin word meaning "third." But their son got wrapped into a blockbuster trade involving three teams Wednesday.

Turner, baseball's No. 96 prospect, along with fellow San Diego prospect Joe Ross, eventually will wind up with the Nationals as part of an 11-player trade that sends 2013 Rookie of the Year Wil Myers to Southern California from the Rays, according to MLB.com.

The Padres also dealt first baseman Jake Bauers, right-handed starter Burch Smith and veteran catcher Rene Rivera to the Rays in exchange for first-year pitchers Jose Castillo and Gerardo Reyes and Major Leaguers Myers and Ryan Hanigan. Tampa Bay also picked up prospects Steven Souza and Travis Ott from Washington.

Since Turner -- who was San Diego's fifth-ranked prospect at the time of the trade -- was a first-round pick last June, he will be a player to be named later and will not officially be traded until June. After starting the season with short-season Eugene, the shortstop was promoted to Class A Fort Wayne, where he posted a .369/.447/.529 slash line over 46 games en route to being named a Padres Organization All-Star.

"He looked at our Minor League system," San Diego manager Bud Black said of general manager A.J. Prellar. "He's looked at our Major League club. He's looked at our pitching. He's looked at our position player group and he feels, like a lot of us, another bat or two combined with our pitching can make a world of difference going into '15."

Ross was the Padres' eighth-ranked prospect at the time of the trade. The 2011 first-round pick totaled a 10-6 record and a 3.92 ERA across Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. Although the right-hander departed, brother Tyson Ross still toils for San Diego.

Ranked No. 14th in the Padres system, Bauers tallied 29 extra-base hits and 51 walks for the TinCaps in his second season. Right-hander Smith, who was limited to two starts for Triple-A El Paso in the regular season due to a forearm strain, made nine appearances in the Arizona Fall League, where he went 3-0 with a 5.52 ERA and nine strikeouts.

Advancing from Class A Hagerstown to the Majors last year, Souza was named the International League MVP and Rookie of the Year, as well as earning honors for Play of the Year while in the bigs. Ott, 19, went 1-4 with a 3.93 ERA over 13 starts with short-season Auburn and Hagerstown in his first full season.

Eighteen-year-old southpaw Castillo has spent two seasons in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League while Reyes, a right-hander from Mexico, recorded 39 strikeouts over 20 relief appearances in his pro debut with short-season Hudson Valley.
