Giants' Hunter Pence Joins River Cats

World Series Champ and Three-Time All-Star to Rehab in Sacramento
May 7, 2015

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - World Series Champion and San Francisco fan-favorite Hunter Pence will join the Sacramento River Cats tonight as he begins his Major League rehab assignment. Pence is expected to start in right field and is scheduled for roughly a week-long stint with the River Cats.

Pence is rehabbing a non-displaced fracture in his left forearm, suffered when he was hit by a pitch early in Spring Training. A fastball from the Chicago Cubs' Corey Black cut up and in on Pence who took the pitch square on his left forearm. After dropping to the ground, Pence trotted gingerly toward first and was met by the assistant trainer Anthony Reyes. He was removed from the game and later diagnosed with the fracture.

The 32-year-old outfielder joined the San Francisco Giants in July of 2012 via a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit just .219 after joining the Giants, but was a major Postseason motivator for the team, delivering series-changing speeches in the 2012 NLDS with the Cincinnati Reds and sealing a victory with his "Triple Hit" in the NLCS against St. Louis. In the 2014 Postseason, Pence hit .333 with a home run and 8 RBI. His iconic "Fence Catch" in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals will be celebrated at Raley Field on Friday, June 19th with the Hunter Pence "Fence Catch" bobblehead giveaway. Since Pence joined the Giants in July 2012, they are 202-181 and have won two World Championships.

The injury not only delayed Pence's start for the 2015 season, but also ended his Major League-leading streak of consecutive games played. Pence had played in 383 consecutive games before the injury kept him out of the lineup. Prior to the end of that streak, Pence's consecutive games started streak came to an end on the second-to-last day of the 2014 season. He was given a day of rest in game 161 against the San Diego Padres but did appear as a pinch-hitter, keeping the games played streak alive.

Pence's rehab assignment begins tonight, Friday, May 8 as the River Cats host the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes at Raley Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. and gates will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are still available. For more information, please call 916.371.HITS or visit rivercats.com.
