Phillips, Reed headline Cal League All-Stars
Surprise, surprise. Three Lancaster JetHawks powered their ways to All-Star game selections.
Astros prospects Brett Phillips and A.J. Reed will headline the California League All-Star team that will take on the Carolina League in the 2015 California/Carolina League All-Star Game to be held June 23 at Rancho Cucamonga's LoanMart Field.
Phillips, Houston's No. 6 prospect and the No. 98 prospect in baseball according to MLB.com, leads the Minors with 54 runs scored, ranks second with 77 hits and third with 33 extra-base hits. The 21-year-old outfielder has produced a .321/.383/.575 line with 11 homers and 44 RBIs in 55 games for the JetHawks.
The bulk of the power has come from Reed, who is tied with High Desert catcher and fellow All-Star Alex Burg for the league lead with 15 homers (second-most in the Minors). Reed, the 2014 Golden Spikes winner and second-round pick out of Kentucky, has a .300/.406/.574 line through 57 games in the first half of his first full pro season.
Second baseman Jack Mayfield (.309 average, .839 OPS) joins those two to give Lancaster three representatives in the Cal League's starting lineup. That's no surprise given that the JetHawks lead the California League in most major offensive categories, including runs (368), average (.284) and OPS (.827).
Also in the California League starting lineup will be Rancho Cucamonga first baseman and recent Stock Watch focus Cody Bellinger and No. 96 prospect Ryan McMahon, who is hitting .311 with a .915 OPS and league-leading 23 doubles for Rockies affiliate Modsto, at third base.
Visalia right-hander Zack Godley (7-3, 1.99 ERA, 75 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings) has been named the starting pitcher.
