Hudson Valley Wins in Dramatic Fashion Over Brooklyn

July 28, 2015

Wappingers Falls, NY (7/28/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones in 10 innings by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday evening at Dutchess Stadium. With the result, the Renegades improve their record to 19-17 while the Cyclones fell to 19-17.

Hudson Valley took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back two out RBI doubles from center fielder Angel Moreno and first baseman Nic Wilson. Brooklyn cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning when second baseman Vinny Siena scored on an error. The Renegades regained their two-run advantage in the bottom of fifth inning on right fielder Cade Gotta's RBI sacrifice fly.

That ended the day for Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Michael Velasquez, who allowed a run off two hits in five innings while striking out five batters.

The Cyclones cut the Renegades lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning as Michael Bernal reached on an error, allowing shortstop Branden Kaupe to score as he singled earlier in the inning. Brooklyn tied the game in the top of the eight inning on a RBI single from Siena.

After both teams failed to score in the ninth inning, extra innings were needed to determine a winner. The Renegades picked up the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as second baseman Jake Cronenworth was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He moved to second base on shortstop Michael Russell's sacrifice bunt and reached third on a wild pitch. After the Cyclones walked Gotta to force the bases loaded, third baseman Matt Dacey flew out to right field and Cronenworth tagged up to attempt to score. On a play at the plate, Cronenworth was ruled safe as the Cyclone's catcher Brandon Brosher obstructed him.

The win went to Justin McCalvin (1-0) as he tossed a perfect 10th inning for the Renegades. Carlos Valdez (1-2) took the loss for Brooklyn as he allowed the winning run to score.

Notes: This is the fifth time that Hudson Valley have won in extra innings in 2015 and the third time that they have won in walk-off fashion at home. The first walk-off win came on July 10th in a 12-inning win against Brooklyn and the second walk-off came on July 22nd as Jake Cronenworth hit a solo home run to defeat Williamsport 7-6.

The Renegades travel to face the Cyclones at MCU Park on Wednesday, July 29th, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm. Hudson Valley returns to Dutchess Stadium to finish the series against Brooklyn on Thursday, July 30th at 7:05pm.
