D-backs' Swanson set for Hillsboro debut
Dansby Swanson, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's Draft, is expected to make his Minor League debut Wednesday after the D-backs cleared him to join Class A Short Season Hillsboro nearly three weeks after the shortstop suffered a concussion.
The 21-year-old Swanson "should be in the lineup" for Hillsboro, D-backs director of player development Mike Bell told MiLB.com.
FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that Swanson, the D-backs' No. 1 prospect, would be joining the Northwest League affiliate and would be "in uniform" to take on Vancouver about a month after inking a $6.5 million signing bonus with Arizona.
The shortstop from Vanderbilt had previously been sent to the D-backs' Rookie-level Arizona League team to start his career but suffered a concussion after getting hit in the mouth by a pitch in his first simulated game for the organization a little over two weeks ago. Swanson needed 14 stitches and experienced concussion symptoms following the injury, prompting Arizona to take it slow with his recovery.
Wednesday's game against Vancouver, a Blue Jays affiliate, is scheduled to begin at 10:05 p.m. ET and will be available on MiLB.TV.
Hops general manager K.L. Wombacher said Swanson passed a concussion test Monday and would fly to Hillsboro on Tuesday night.
"[The organization] will ease him back in," Wombacher told The Oregonian.
Swanson, MLB.com's No. 12 overall prospect, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series and to the All-Tournament team after hitting .323 with five runs scored and three doubles with four stolen bases in 2014, helping Vanderbilt to the crown. He followed that up with a strong 2015 campaign, hitting .335 with 15 homers, 24 doubles, six triples and 64 RBIs as a junior.
One of four finalists for Golden Spikes Award, Swanson hit .334 over his final two seasons for the Commodores before the D-backs made him the top pick in the Draft.
For Hillsboro, the marquee name will put a spotlight on the club, which is in its third season since relocating from Yakima, Washington, in 2013.
"For us it's exciting that the D-backs have confidence in us to provide a great first experience for Dansby [and] their high Draft picks," Wombacher told The Oregonian. "If I was a fan and really wanted to see him play, I would make sure I got in to see him Wednesday, Thursday or Friday," Wombacher said, implying Swanson might not be a Hop for long. "You never know with a No. 1 overall pick."
