Atlanta Announces Minor League Award Winners

Jenkins, Smith named Pitcher, Player of the Year

PEARL, MS -- The Atlanta Braves announced its 2015 minor league players and pitchers of the year. The honorees will be recognized Saturday, September 19 at Turner Field in Atlanta. Tyrell Jenkins and Mallex Smith were named pitcher and player of the year for the Braves organization as a whole. Victor Mateo and Emerson Landonireceived the honors for the Double-A Mississippi club.

 

Jenkins, 22, split time between Double-A and Triple-A this season. With the G-Braves, he went 3-4 with a 3.57 ERA in nine starts. He was 5-5 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 starts for the M-Braves. Jenkins ranked fourth in the Braves system in ERA (3.19) and fifth in strikeouts (88). The Braves No. 12 prospect as ranked by Baseball America was named by the Braves organization as Mississippi's May Pitcher of the Month (3-1, 3.35 ERA in six starts). A native of Henderson, TX, Jenkins was acquired by the Braves as part of a trade with the Cardinals that sent Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden to St. Louis on November 17, 2014. He was originally selected by the Cardinals in the supplemental round (50th overall) of the 2010 draft.

 

Smith, 22, combined to hit .306 in 126 games between Triple-A and Double-A this season. With the G-Braves, Smith hit .281 in 69 games, posting his best numbers in August, .336. In Mississippi, Smith had a .340 average with nine extra-base hits, 22 RBI and 23 stolen bases through 57 games. The Braves No. 19 prospect as ranked byBaseball America led all Braves farmhands with 57 stolen bases and ranked fourth in batting average. The Southern League All-Star was named by the organization as Mississippi's May Player of the Month, hitting .347 in 26 games. Smith was acquired by the Braves via trade with the Padres along with several others in exchange for Justin Upton and Aaron Northcraft on December 19, 2014. He was originally selected by San Diego in the fifth round of the 2012 draft.

 

Mateo, 25, began the season at Double-A where he went 6-6 with a 2.68 ERA in 19 games (18 starts). He posted his best numbers in June, making five starts that month with a 3-2 record and a 1.67 ERA. Mateo was promoted to Triple-A in early August where he went 4-3 with a 5.36 ERA in eight outings with the G-Braves. He ranked tied for second in the Braves organization with 10 wins. Mateo spent the last two seasons at Double-A Montgomery in the Rays system. In 2013, he went 7-9 with a 3.93 ERA while posting a record of 12-11 with a 3.90 ERA in 28 starts for the Biscuits last year. Mateo was signed by the Braves as a free agent on November 13, 2014.

 

Landoni, 26, had a .297 average with 23 doubles, four triples, a homer and 45 RBI in 118 games with the Double-A club this season. He was named by the Braves as Mississippi August player of the month (.345, 29 games). Landoni was also named Southern League Player of the Week for the week of July 6-12. In six games that week, he posted a .556 batting average with six extra-base hits and five RBI. The Maracay, Venzuela, native was signed by the Braves as a free agent on December 20, 2011. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Marlins in December 2005 but was released prior to the 2007 season. Landoni then signed with the Yankees in 2008 where he played four seasons before joining the Braves organization.

The Mississippi Braves baseball team is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since the inaugural 2005 season, over 100 M-Braves have gone on to play in the big leagues.
