Phils Sign Veterans; Cervenak Headed to Marlins

Pork Barrel Blog Looks at Quinlan, Young
January 7, 2011
As we move into the new year, there are some exciting new names in the Phillies organization that may find themselves at Coca-Cola Park this coming season. Also this week, a former All-Star with the IronPigs, Mike Cervenak, signed a Minor League deal with the Florida Marlins.

The Phillies announced Thursday that veteran players Delwyn Young and Robb Quinlan have been invited to Phillies Spring Training as non-roster invitees.

Quinlan, a 33-year-old corner infielder, was drafted by the Angels in 1999 and made his major league debut in 2003. He spent significant time at the major league level in each of his seven subsequent seasons with the Angels, compiling a .276 average and a .401 slugging percentage over 458 games played. In the wake of Andy Tracy's departure from the IronPigs, a veteran corner infielder like Quinlan could possibly fill the void that Tracy leaves behind if he finds himself headed to Triple-A at the conclusion of Spring Training.

Young, 28, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2006, and has spent the past two seasons in the Pirates organization. During the past two seasons with the Pirates, Quinlan has appeared in 124 and 110 major league games, respectively, compared to having played only a season maximum of 83 games in the majors while in the Dodgers organization. Young has split his time at the major league level between second base and right field, and has posted a .258 average with a .393 slugging percentage in 344 major league games.

With possible new additions to the IronPigs comes movement from former 'Pigs as well. Mike Cervenak, starting third baseman for the IronPigs over the course of their first two seasons, has signed with the Florida Marlins. Cervenak played for the IronPigs during the inaugural 2008 season and posted a .311 average with a .452 slugging percentage, which resulted in his long-awaited major league debut on July 11th. In 2009, Cervenak posted a .305 average with a .450 slugging percentage while back with the IronPigs. Following the 2009 season, Cervenak was released by the Phillies and signed with the Mets, where he faced off against at the IronPigs as a member of the Buffalo Bisons this past season.
