July 29, 2005
PEORIA, Ill. -- The Peoria Chiefs, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced that Cubs right-hander Kerry Wood will rehab with the Chiefs beginning Sunday afternoon in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Wood will return to Peoria and is schedule to pitch at least one inning for the Chiefs in their home game on Tuesday against the Kane County Cougars.

The Chiefs and Wizards play at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday and Wood is expected to throw at least one inning out of the bullpen in both appearances. Tuesday's game at O'Brien Field starts at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.peoriachiefs.com and www.ticketreturn.com or by calling 1-866-MYTICKET. The O'Brien Field box office will open at 10 a.m. on Monday for in-person purchases.

Lawn Seats are $6; box seats, $9; and club box seats, $10.

Wood was placed on the disabled list after his start in Cincinnati on July 20 in which he lasted just three innings. He left that start with shoulder stiffness. He missed time from April 30-June 29 and made rehab appearances at Triple-A Iowa during that DL stint. Overall in 2005, the former NL Rookie of the Year is 3-3 with a 4.67 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 54 innings.

Selected with the fourth overall pick in 1995, Wood made his Cubs' debut in 1998 with a 13-6 record and a 3.40 ERA. He made national headlines on May 6, 1998, when he tied the Major League record with 20 strikeouts in a one-hitter against Houston.

He won the 1998 National League Rookie of the Year as the Cubs won the NL wild card. Wood went 14-11 in 2003 while leading the NL in strikeouts and making the All-Star team. He helped the Cubs to the 2003 Central Division title and in the NLDS he went 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA and also hit a home run. He entered the 2005 season with a 67-50 career record, a 3.63 ERA and 1,209 strikeouts in just 1043 innings.

Wood is the second Cubs player to rehab at Peoria within the last week. Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-5 with two walks and two RBIs in games Wednesday and Thursday at O'Brien Field. The five-time All-Star helped the Chiefs to their top two attendances in franchise history -- 9,004 on Wednesday and 9,602 on Thursday.
