June 18, 2016

Birmingham, AL - The Mississippi Braves posted 16 knocks as a team on Friday night at Regions Field, pulling away to a 7-1 win over the Birmingham Barons to take a 2-1 series edge.

Mel Rojas Jr. led off the game with a home run, his second, joining Ozzie Albies on April 26 as the two Braves (33-34) to lead off a game with a home run this year.

Jed Bradley held the Barons (28-40) scoreless over 3 2/3 innings, allowing just a hit and three walks while striking out six in the spot start. Akeel Morris (1-0) picked up the win, continuing the shutout over 1 2/3 hitless innings.

The Braves made the lead more comfortable with a two-run third inning. Rojas started the frame with a single, followed by a Dian Toscano single. Dansby Swanson flied out to deep left and Rojas tagged up to move to third, setting up a Dustin Peterson RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead. It was Peterson's team-leading 41st RBI. Carlos Franco added an RBI single to make it 3-0.

In the fourth, Willians Astudillo and Levi Hyams added singles to lead off, and Johan Camargo grounded into a double play to bring home a run and make it 4-0.

Barons starter Brandon Brennan (1-4) allowed four runs on 10 hits over five innings in the loss, striking out two and walking none.

In the seventh, Jacob Schrader hit a massive two-run homer to right-center off reliever Andre Wheeler, his seventh of the year, to make it 6-0.

Birmingham got their only run in the 7th off Braves reliever Jason Hursh. Jeremy Dowdy started the frame with a single. Adam Engel singled to right to put them at the corners, and Eddy Alvarez drove home a run with an errant force attempt at second by Schrader.

The Braves added their final run in the eighth. Toscano drew a two-out walk, and Swanson doubled him home to make it 7-1.

Peterson singled in the first inning after a 15-pitch at-bat, extending his hit streak to 13 games and on-base streak to 16-games, both team highs this season.

The M-Braves look to get back to .500 baseball on the season on Saturday night, sending hander Sean Newcomb (3-4, 4.11) to the hill against Barons left-hander David Holmberg (5-4, 3.82).
