Trout, Travelers rally again in ninth

Arkansas strings together eight-run inning to stun Springfield
May 8, 2011
After failing to register a come-from-behind win in its first 23 games, Arkansas scored three in the ninth Saturday night to edge host Springfield, 5-4. Then they did it again, in an even more spectacular fashion, on Sunday afternoon.

Mike Trout and Jay Brossman homered to lead an eight-run ninth-inning rally, stunning the Mother's Day crowd at Springfield's Hammons Field as the Travelers beat the Cardinals, 10-6.

"We never stop playing," said Trout, the No. 1 prospect in MLB.com's preseason Top 50. "We have good team chemistry, we're patient and we know we're capable of putting up crooked numbers."

After Adam Young led off the ninth with a walk, Trout clubbed his fifth longball of the season off the scoreboard in deep left-center field to draw Arkansas within two runs, 6-4.

"I got a good pitch to hit and got good wood on it," Trout said.

Arkansas collected three more singles and a double from Clay Fuller to tie the score, 6-6, when Springfield reliever Jesse Simpson intentionally walked Alberto Rosario to load the bases. Brossman responded with his first homer of the season on a 1-1 fastball to complete the scoring.

Brossman's blast -- Arkansas' second grand slam of the campaign -- capped the club's biggest inning of the year.

Trout finished his day 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. He leads the Travelers with five home runs.

Brossman also doubled in a run in the fifth to give him five RBIs in the game and 10 for the season.

Arkansas reliever Daniel Sattler (1-2) picked up the victory, despite giving up three runs on two hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Chris Scholl closed out the win with a perfect ninth.

Brett Zawacki (2-1) suffered the loss for Springfield, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk over one-third of an inning. Simpson yielded three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out.

Third baseman Niko Vasquez led the Cardinals offense, going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer.

After starting their current eight-game road trip with three losses, the Travelers have won three in a row for the first time since mid-April. The back-to-back comeback wins over Springfield vaulted the Travs over the Cardinals into third place in the Texas League North, 3 1/2 games behind first-place Tulsa.
