Red Sox recall pitcher Scott Atchison to Boston

The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher John Lackey on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 12) with a right elbow strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison from Triple-A Pawtucket. Atchison will be active for tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Lackey, 32, has made seven starts with the Red Sox this season, going 2-5 with an 8.01 ERA (35 ER/39.1 IP). Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent on December 15, 2009, the right-hander is 16-16 with a 4.95 ERA (140 ER/254.1 IP) with 175 strikeouts compared to 90 walks in 40 starts with Boston. He has a 118-87 career record with a 3.98 ERA (776 ER/1,755.1 IP) in 274 games (273 starts) over parts of 10 seasons with the Angels (2002-09) and Red Sox (2010-11).

The 35-year-old Atchison appeared in one game for the Red Sox this season, tossing a career-high 3.2 innings of relief (3 ER) on May 5 against the Angels. In 12 games with Triple-A Pawtucket this season, including one start, he has gone 1-0 with one save, a 1.25 ERA (3 ER/21.2 IP) and 23 strikeouts compared to one walk. Atchison has appeared in 97 career Major League games (1 start) over parts of five seasons with Seattle (2004-05), San Francisco (2007) and Boston (2010-11), tallying a 4.37 ERA (64 ER/131.2 IP) and 113 strikeouts while going 4-6.
