Woodruff repeats as Southern League Pitcher of the Week

Woodruff earned the win and homered in Sunday's 1-0 win at Pensacola
July 25, 2016

BILOXI, MS. - Brandon Woodruff made his first start since July 13 last night in Pensacola due to spending time on the Temporary Inactive List with the death of his brother on July 16, and dominated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos over six scoreless innings in the Biloxi Shuckers' 1-0 shutout to wrap up a five-game series. With that performance, Woodruff has been named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Woodruff took a perfect game into the fifth inning last night, eventually struck out nine Blue Wahoos batters and did not issue a walk over his time on the mound. The Mississippi State product carried his outstanding performance to the plate as well, providing the game's lone run with his first professional homer, a solo shot in the third inning.

Woodruff has not allowed a run over his last 17.1 innings on the mound, including 13 innings in his last two starts. In four July starts, Woodruff is 3-1 with a 0.36 ERA (23.2ip, 1er) with three walks and 32 strikeouts. He has struck out 19 and walked one in his last two games, allowing only four hits. Overall in 20 starts between Brevard County and Biloxi, Woodruff is 9-7 with a 2.89 ERA (106ip, 34er) with 30 walks and 117 strikeouts. His 117 punch-outs rank seventh in all of Minor League Baseball.

Biloxi will look to salvage the series in the final on Sunday at Blue Wahoos Stadium. RHP Brandon Woodruff (4-6, 4.04) will take the mound for the Shuckers and face off against RHP Nick Travieso (4-6, 4.16). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with coverage starting at 5:40 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.

The Shuckers continue their seven-game road trip to Mobile and face off against the BayBears after the league-wide off day on Monday. The first two games of the five-game set take place at Hank Aaron Stadium, with the final three being played at MGM Park. Game one features RHP Angel Ventura (0-2, 5.06) on the mound for the Shuckers, while it has yet to be determined who will make the start for the BayBears. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 pm on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
