Report: Paddack needs Tommy John surgery

Chris Paddack's breakout season has come to an end.

San Diego's No. 8 prospect will likely undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He's expected to miss 14 to 18 months.

The 20-year-old right-hander went 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 48 strikeouts and just two walks over six starts with Class A Greensboro when he was dealt from Miami to San Diego for reliever Fernando Rodney on June 30. The trade came at the tail end of a three-start stretch from June 12-25 in which Paddack didn't allow a hit while striking out 28 batters over 15 innings.

He was named South Atlantic League Player of the Month for June and took Pitcher of the Week honors on June 26.

After joining Fort Wayne, the 2015 eighth-round pick posted a 0.64 ERA, fanning 23 batters while walking three over three outings in which he didn't factor into any decisions. Midwest and Sally League opponents combined to bat .139 against him.

Paddack's numbers propelled him from Marlins' No. 18 prospect at the outset of the season to his current Padres standing in the midseason update.
