Senzel, Piatnik Enjoy Big Nights in Dragons Win

September 1, 2016

Dayton, Ohio-Nick Senzel connected on two doubles and drove in three runs while James Vasquez added a home run to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 6-2 victory over the Lake County Captains in the next-to-last home game of the year for the Dragons. The two clubs have split the first two games of the three-game series.

Lake County took a 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning before the Dragons battled back to tie in bottom half of the frame. Chris Okey and Brantley Bell drew back-to-back walks with two outs and Daniel Sweet followed with an infield single that deflected off the pitcher, allowing Okey to score from second base and tie the game.

In the fifth, the Dragons took the lead. Zack Shields blooped a single to left to start the rally and went from first to third on Mitch Piatnik's hit-and-run single. One batter later, Senzel lined a double to right-center field to drive in both Shields and Piatnik and give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.

Lake County responded with one run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2, but Dragons reliever Sandy Lugo pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam to keep the Dragons in front.

The Dragons added to their lead in the seventh, taking advantage of two throwing errors in the inning by Lake County pitcher Argenis Angulo. Shields walked to start the inning and eventually scored on the second of the two errors by Angulo. Senzel delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2, and Vasquez added a solo home run with two outs in the inning to extend the Dragons lead to 6-2.

Dragons starting pitcher Wendolyn Bautista (2-0) scattered 11 base hits and left the game with the lead, earning the win. He worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. When Bautista allowed a run in the fourth inning, it snapped a personal string of 17 straight scoreless innings for him. Sandy Lugo replaced Bautista and finished the game by retiring all 10 batters he faced, striking out six to earn his second save. Lugo extended his own personal scoreless streak to 18.2 innings, the longest of the year for a Dayton pitcher.

The Dragons finished the night with eight hits. Senzel was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI. Piatnik was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and two runs. Shields extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games while Luis Gonzalez pushed his to 10 straight. The Dragons longest hitting streak of the year belongs to Daniel Sweet, who hit safely in 12 straight games.

The Dragons (25-41, 46-90) host the Captains (30-36, 70-66) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the Dragons final home game of the season.  Tony Santillan (2-3, 8.87) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Micah Miniard (0-2, 4.59). The Dragons will complete their Midwest League schedule with three games at South Bend Saturday through Monday.
