Trevino does it all in Saguaros win
This season, Jose Trevino shifted his strengths by hitting for average instead of power while cutting down his strikeouts.
Now that he's in Arizona, he's showing he can do a little bit of everything -- without striking out. The Rangers' No. 20 prospect went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBIs and three runs scored on Wednesday afternoon as Surprise top[ed Scottsdale, 6-1, in Arizona Fall League action.
Trevino knocked a single to right field in the first inning, then ripped a two-run homer to left-center in the second as the Saguaros built a quick 5-0 cushion. The 23-year-old catcher continued his big day with a two-out double to left in the fourth but flied out in the sixth as he fell a triple shy of the cycle.
Through eight AFL games, Trevino is batting .286 with five extra-base hits, six RBIs and five runs scored. He's tallied four multi-hit games and has not struck out since his Fall League debut on Oct. 12.
In his third pro season, Trevino hit a career-high .303 with a career-low 49 punchouts in 109 games for Class A Advanced High Desert. While the Oral Roberts product saw a dip in his home run total from 14 in 2015 to nine, he notched a personal-best 39 extra-base hits while helping the Mavericks win the California League championship.
Trevino backed a strong performance by his Mavericks teammate, Brett Martin (1-1). The Rangers' eighth-ranked prospect gave up three hits and a walk while fanning three over four scoreless innings.
Pirates prospect Eric Wood went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to boost his average to .400.
Across the diamond, Tim Tebow collected his first AFL extra-base hit. The former Heisman Trophy winner turned Mets prospect laced a double to center on the first pitch he saw from Red Sox right-hander Danny Mars in the fifth. Tebow is 3-for-28 (.107) with a pair of walks and an RBI in eight games.
In other Arizona Fall League action:
Solar Sox 12, Javelinas 5
Mesa (7-7) handed league-leading Peoria (10-2) its second loss, getting a homer and three runs scored from Marlins No. 4 prospect Brian Anderson, who was 3-for-4. Top Cubs prospect Ian Happ went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Indians No. 19 prospect Greg Allen reached three times, stole his fifth base, scored two runs and knocked in one. A's No. 19 prospect Dylan Covey improved to 2-0 for the Solar Sox after allowing a run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Second-ranked Mariners prospect Tyler O'Neill picked up two hits and an RBI for Peoria. Box score
Desert Dogs 6, Rafters 1
Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo -- the Dodgers' top position prospects -- combined for two doubles, a single, an RBI and a run scored, while 14th-ranked White Sox prospect Courtney Hawkins slugged a two-run homer, his first in the AFL. Nolan Sanburn (White Sox) yielded a run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings to pick up the win. Rockies outfielder Noel Cuevas contributed two hits and scored a run for Salt River. Box score
