Greensboro's McCann drives in eight runs

Slugger moves into second in SAL with 98 RBIs
August 20, 2005
Brad McCann is enjoying a spectacular month for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. On Friday, he had a week's worth of RBIs in one night.

McCann went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and eight RBIs to lead the Grasshoppers to an 18-1 South Atlantic League rout of the Lake County Captains.

The 22-year-old first baseman delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning that sent Greensboro on the way to its most lopsided win of the season. He struck out in the second but slugged a grand slam to cap a five-run fourth and give the Grasshoppers a 9-1 cushion.

McCann, who is third in the league with 26 home runs, added a run-scoring base hit in the fifth to move into second place with 98 RBIs. He singled again in the sixth before leaving for a pinch-hitter.

A sixth-round pick of the Florida Marlins in the 2004 draft, McCann has three homers and 12 RBIs in his last three games. He has hit safely in 15 of 16 August games (26-for-66) to raise his average from .275 to .294.

Cole Seifrig, Jared Gaston, J.T. Restko and Norberto Batista each chipped in three hits as part of Greensboro's 22-hit assault. The top five batters in the Grasshoppers lineup -- Seifrig, Gaston, Restko, McCann and Steve Gendron -- combined to go 16-for-25 with 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
