Hamilton, Roach among Cal All-Stars
Bakersfield shortstop Billy Hamilton, who leads all of baseball with 71 stolen bases, headlines a Cal League roster that also includes High Desert catcher John Hicks, Stockton first baseman Miles Head and Rancho Cucamonga third baseman C.J. Retherford, who ranks second in the league with 14 home runs.
Other starters include Visalia's Chris Owings, High Desert's Stefen Romero and Julio Morban, Lancaster's George Springer and Lake Elsinore's Rico Noel. Lake Elsinore right-hander Donn Roach, who leads the league with a 10-1 record and ranks second with a 1.97 ERA, was voted as the team's starter.
The squad will play against the Carolina League's All-Stars on June 19 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Hamilton, who has more than three times as many steals as Major League theft leader Emilio Bonifacio, is batting .320 with 79 hits in 60 games for the Blaze as he follows up a 2011 campaign in which he stole 103 bases at Class A Dayton.
The league did not designate positions for infielders or designated hitter. Teams were voted upon managers, team executives and local media, with three ballots distributed out to each Cal League club.
Several players voted to the team will not participate due to promotion or injury, including High Desert outfielder Corey Dickerson, Visalia left-hander David Holmberg and Bakersfield southpaw Tony Cingrani. Lancaster first baseman Telvin Nash, who leads all Class A Advanced hitters with 18 home runs, did not make the team.
Lake Elsinore Storm skipper Shawn Wooten will manage the team after the Padres affiliate won the Cal League crown last summer. Below is the full roster:
