Wings' 2013 staff named by Twins
Glynn guided the 2012 Red Wings to a 72-72 record for the club’s best mark in four years. Mason, who spent the last two years as a pitching coach in the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system following 11 seasons as the St. Louis Cardinals’ bullpen coach, replaces Bobby Cuellar. Doherty, who served as an assistant to the Boston Red Sox’ major league coaching staff in 2012, replaces Tom Brunansky. Both Cuellar (bullpen coach) and Brunansky (hitting coach) were promoted to the Twins’ major league coaching staff for the 2013 season.
With 72 wins in 2012, Glynn’s Red Wings won 19 more games than the 2011 club (53-91) and 23 more than the 2010 squad (49-95). The Waseca, Minnesota native last year managed 56 players, 23 of which were promoted to the Twins. He used 19 different starting pitchers, two shy of the franchise record of 21 in 1998.
The 2013 season will be Glynn’s seventh as a minor league manager, his second at the Triple-A level. He also served on the major league coaching staffs of the Colorado Rockies (1994-98), Montreal Expos (1999), Chicago Cubs (2000-02), and San Francisco Giants (2003-06). Glynn also served as a pro scout for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2007-11.
Mason spent the 2012 season as the pitching coach of the Cubs’ Single-A Daytona affiliate of the Florida State League. In 2011, the Kentucky native was the pitching coach for the Cubs’ Double-A Tennessee club of the Southern League. He spent the previous 25 years as a coach in the Cardinals organization, including 11 seasons as Tony LaRussa’s bullpen coach from 2000-10. Mason has three years of coaching experience at the Triple-A level, guiding the pitching staffs of the Cardinals’ Louisville (1997) and Memphis (1998-99) affiliates.
Mason pitched for seven seasons in the minor leagues from 1980-86 in the Yankees’ and Cardinals’ systems.
Doherty primarily assisted Red Sox hitting coach Dave Magadan in 2012. He spent the previous nine seasons with the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent American Association, serving as their hitting coach from 2003-09 and manager from 2010-11. Doherty also has nine years of coaching experience at the collegiate level with Seminole Junior College (1990-92), University of Southwestern Louisiana (1993), and Southwest Texas State University (1994-97). He served as an associate scout for the Cleveland Indians during his tenure at Seminole.
Doherty played college ball at Oral Roberts University ( Tulsa, Oklahoma) and made his coaching debut in 1989 with ORU.
