Potomac Nationals set playoff game times
The Potomac Nationals will host two games in the first round of the best-of-five Division Series beginning Wednesday, September 3 at 7:05 p.m. Game two of the series will also start at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, September 4. The P-Nats will be on the road for games three and four (if necessary) and will return home for game five of the Division Series if needed on Sunday, September 7. Sunday's game would be a special 4:05 p.m. start time.
The best-of-five Mills Cup Championship Series will begin on Monday, September 8 as the Southern Division champion will host the first two games. After a travel day, the Northern Division champion will then host game three of the series on Thursday, September 11. The Northern Division champ will also host games four and five if necessary on September 12 and 13. Should Potomac advance to the Mills Cup finals, all three games will begin at 7:05 p.m.
The Carolina League playoffs return to Pfitzner Stadium for the first time since 2004 when the Potomac Cannons dropped two of three games to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The franchise has not played in the Mills Cup finals since winning its last league title in 1989. The postseason appearance by the P-Nats will be just the sixth in the 31-year history of the Alexandria/Prince William/Potomac franchise (1982, 1989, 1991, 1995, 2004). The 1982 Alexandria Dukes and 1989 Prince William Cannons are the only two teams in franchise history to ever win a Carolina League Championship.
Entering play on Wednesday, August 27, the Potomac Nationals boast a record of 76-58, four wins shy of matching the '82 Dukes for most wins in a single season in franchise history. The P-Nats magic number to clinch the second half Northern Division crown is three. If the club is able to win the second half, it would mark the first time in franchise history that a team has won both halves in the same season.
By winning the first half championship, Potomac became the first domestic affiliate of the Washington Nationals ever to clinch a playoff berth. The Gulf Coast League Nationals, led by former Potomac manager Bobby Henley, recently became the second. No full-season Nationals affiliate has ever qualified for the post-season prior to 2008. Last year, the Dominican Summer League Nationals1 became the first Nationals affiliate to ever win a league title.
The team with the second-best record in the second half would face the P-Nats should they win the second half title.
