Two for the Show: WV players honored
CHARLESTON, WV (August 29, 2013) - The South Atlantic League has announced the selection of its' 2013 Annual All-Star Team and two members of the West Virginia Power have been chosen for the end-of-season honors. Josh Bell was selected as one of the top outfielders and Tyler Glasnow was chosen as the top right-handed pitcher in a league poll of the 14 South Atlantic League team's field managers, general managers, sports writers, and broadcasters.
Bell, the Pirates second round draft choice in 2011, played just 15 games in 2012 before the 21 year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury on April 24. In 2013, the outfielder is among West Virginia's team leaders in games played (117), average (.281), home runs (12), extra-base hits (51), and tops the club with 75 runs batted in and 37 doubles.
Glasnow, a fifth round selection by Pittsburgh in 2011, leads the league with 160 strikeouts while only pitching 106 and a third innings this season. The 20 year-old has recorded double-digit strikeouts in five of his 23 starts this season and has a 2.29 earned run average. With his 135th strikeout of the year on August 7 at Delmarva, Glasnow set a new Power franchise record for strikeouts in a single season and has continued to add to that tally since.
Both Bell and Glasnow were selected to participate in the mid-season All-Star Game at Lakewood, NJ, though neither played in the game.
Gabriel Ynoa of the Savannah Sand Gnats was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Ynoa, 20, holds a 14-4 record this season and ranks among the league leaders with a 2.71 earned run average over 21 starts. The Asheville Tourists' Rosell Herrera was selected as the South Atlantic League's Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Herrera, 20, leads the league in batting average (.343), hits (162) and total bases (243), while also ranking among the leaders in at bats, runs batted in, runs scored, and extra-base hits.
Tripp Keister earned the nod for Manager of the Year. The Hagerstown skipper, in his second year as a manager in the Washington Nationals organization, led the Suns to the South Atlantic League's Northern Division first half title. Savannah pitching coach Frank Viola was also honored for his efforts as Coach of the Year.
