GCL Braves no-hit Yankees

Caleb Brewer is trying to make up for lost time. On Saturday, he helped the Braves make Gulf Coast League history.

Brewer struck out eight over four innings and combined with Edigson Mora and Andrew Wilson on the Braves' second no-hitter of the season, a 4-0 blanking of the Yankees.

Selected by Atlanta in the 14th round of the 2007 Draft, Brewer missed all of last season. The 20-year-old right-hander did not allow a run over 9 1/3 innings in his first three appearances this year, then surrendered three runs in each of his last two starts.

Against the Yankees, Brewer fanned seven of the first 10 batters before running into trouble in the fourth inning. With one out, Jose Mojica reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jake Hanson, stole second and took third on a wild pitch as Ramon Flores walked.

One out later, Flores stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. But Brewer struck out Mitchell Delaney on his final pitch of the afternoon.

Mora, a 21-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic, followed with four almost-perfect frames. Mojica reached on an another error by Hanson in the sixth but was thrown out trying to take second. Mora also hit Jose Toussen in the eighth but fanned three to record the win and lower his ERA to 1.00.

Wilson, a 36th-round pick in last month's Draft, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the Braves' third shutout of the season.

Eighth-round pick Kyle Rose had two hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Braves, whose other no-hitter was a combined seven-inning effort by Ronan Pacheco, Danilo Alvarez and Jamie Hayes against the Blue Jays on July 7.

B.J. Hermsen, Dakota Watts and Jose Gonzalez of the Twins combined on the GCL's first no-hitter of the season on June 24 in a 5-0 victory over the Orioles. On July 11, Salvador Aguilar, Jhonathan Torres and Marcos Tabata of the Mets duplicated the feat in a 1-0 whitewash of the Nationals.
