Winter League Report for December 2
I-CUBS WINTER LEAGUE UPDATE
December 2, 2013
The baseball world will gather in Orlando, Florida next week for the annual Baseball Winter Meetings. The Meetings typically produce a big signing, trade, or both during the week. The teams that made big moves during the Meetings the last two years have had disappointing seasons to follow it up, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I will be attending the meetings, so there will not be a posted Winter League Report on December 9, but follow me on Twitter (@RandyWehofer) for updates and any other interesting things I may come across next week. The Winter League Report will return on December 16.
TRANSACTIONS:
Tonight is the deadline for clubs to tender contract offers to the players currently on their roster that are arbitration eligible. Any player who is non-tendered will become a free agent. In Major League moves last week, the Chicago Cubs acquired C George Kottaras from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations. The Royals had designated Kottaras for assignment after signing C Francisco Pena away from the New York Mets as a free agent. Kottaras will be a key piece in the competition for the Cubs' back-up catcher position behind Welington Castillo. Last year's back-up, Dioner Navarro, is reportedly close to signing a two-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. In other catching news, the Tampa Bay Rays signed C Jose Molina (1997, '99-2000 with Iowa) to a two-year deal. The Minnesota Twins have made big news in free agency already this off-season, signing RH Ricky Nolasco (2004) to a four-year contract and have reportedly added RH Phil Hughes from the New York Yankees. LH Ted Lilly (rehab with Iowa in 2010) confirmed reports that he is retiring. The story originally surfaced in Venezuela where Lilly was attempting a comeback with Magallanes. The 37-year-old has been limited by back and shoulder injuries over the last three seasons.
On the minor league side, I tweeted early last week that CBSsports.com had on their transactions list that RH Cory Wade signed a minor league contract with the Cubs. Later in the week, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweeted that Wade "will sign" with the Royals. Other reports that mention Wade also link him to the Royals, citing the same tweet from Cotillo. I checked a little bit further and found out Wade has not formally signed with anyone as of today. The Royals signing seems more likely as the Cubs brought on Wade as a minor league free agent last season and assigned him to Iowa to start the year. He allowed 14 runs on 28 hits in 16.0 innings over 10 appearances and was released on May 7. Wade was picked up by the Rays and was 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA (12ER/49.2IP) in 30 games, including five starts, at triple-A Durham from May 13-August 25. He was released by the Rays and signed with the New York Mets in time to make two appearances at Las Vegas to end the year. I'll keep my eye out for an "official" report.
Several sources, including the player himself via Twitter, are reporting that the Cubs have re-signed OF Darnell McDonald today on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. McDonald spent most of last season with Iowa and hit .236 (62-for-263) with four home runs and 26 RBI in 92 games. He was called up to Chicago on August 10 and hit .302 (16-for-53) with a homer and five RBI in 25 games to finish the year.
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE:
Caribes is 6-4 in their last 10 games and leads the league with a 28-17 overall record. Aragua made a big move in the standings this week, winning five straight games to pull into a second-place tie with Magallanes at 24-20, 3.5 games back. Magallanes has lost three straight. Former Iowa manager, Buddy Bailey (2007), manages Aragua. SS Ronny Cedeno had a nine-game hitting streak for Aragua from Nov. 20-28. RH Yoanner Negrin continues to impress for Caracas. He pitched five shutout innings for a win vs. Lara on Nov. 28 and moved into ninth in the league in ERA at 3.47. He leads the league in WHIP (1.18) and is third in innings pitched (49.1). RH Guillermo Moscoso had an up-and-down week. He allowed one run in five innings for a win at Aragua in his first start, but gave up six runs (five earned) in four innings in a loss vs. Caribes in his second outing of the week. SS Alberto Gonzalez is riding a five-game hitting streak and is batting .294 (5-for-17) with a homer and two RBI during this stretch.

JAPANESE PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL:
3B Casey McGehee (2006-08 with Iowa) had an outstanding first season in Japan and earned a ring as the Rakuten Golden Eagles topped the Yomiuri Giants in seven games to win the Nippon Series. McGehee has publicly expressed an interest to return to the United States in 2014. OF Matt Murton (2005, '07-08) topped the .300 mark for the third time in four seasons with Hanshin and has a career .312 average with 54 home runs and 274 RBI in 550 games with the Tigers. Murton is a free agent heading into the 2014 campaignm but there was a report this week that he is likely headed back to Hanshin. 1B Bryan LaHair (2010-11) had a solid season in his first foray into Japanese baseball. He signed a two-year deal and will return to the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks again next year. 1B Micah Hoffpauir (2004-10) completed his third, and most likely last, season with the Fighters. He did hit grand slams in consecutive days in early May to tie a Japanese record. Former I-Cub, Tuffy Rhodes, is one of the six other players to accomplish that feat in Japan. RHP Miguel Socolovich (2012) made just a couple of appearances last in the season with Iowa in 2012 after getting claimed off waivers by the Cubs from the Baltimore Orioles. This was his first season in Japan.
