Sanchez upstages Pelfrey

Humberto Sanchez upstaged Mike Pelfrey's Double-A debut by striking out 13 over seven dominant innings as the Erie SeaWolves edged the Binghamton Mets, 1-0, on Saturday.

Sanchez (2-1) allowed five hits and three walks, lowering his ERA to 1.50. Since his lone loss on April 12, the 22-year-old right-hander has given up three runs on 13 hits over 20 innings with 29 strikeouts.

The Tigers' 31st-round pick in the 2001 draft leads the Eastern League with 41 strikeouts.

After Brian Rogers worked a perfect eighth, Chris Homer struck out two in the ninth for his fifth save.

Pelfrey was solid in his Binghamton debut, limiting the SeaWolves to three hits and two walks over 5 2/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. The former first-round draft pick was 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA in four Florida State League starts.

Ryan Cullen (0-3) took the loss after surrendering one run on two hits in two innings.

Kody Kirkland doubled to start the seventh, moved to third on a bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Hunt for the lone run for the SeaWolves (9-13). Carlos Gomez and Wilson Batista had two hits apiece for the Mets (11-11).
